Activity 13.3
THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORT
Aim:
When you have completed this activity you will have developed a scenario
where oil continues to be the main source of transport fuel, and then
a second scenario where renewable sources of fuel are combined with other
ideas to ensure a healthy lifestyle.
CONTINUED USE OF OIL AS A FUEL
You will need:
- The information from the Fact
Sheet for this topic and other information from this kit
- Information from your own research into the topic
Procedure:
- Think carefully about all the information you have read.
- Assume that humans will continue to use oil for transport at the current
rate of usage into the future. Form into groups of four and discuss
these questions:
- What might happen to people’s health, especially in cities?
- What might happen to the environment?
- What might happen to people’s lifestyles, especially in cities?
- What might happen to the economy if we do not develop viable alternatives
to oil before it runs out?
- What might happen if many more people chose to drive cars?
- Still in groups of four, prepare a scenario showing conditions in
a city you are familiar with, 15 years from now. The scenario could
be a role-play, a drawing or a description. It must depict people’s
responses to the things mentioned in the questions above.
A POSITIVE TRANSPORT FUTURE
You will need:
- The information from the Fact
Sheet and other relevant topics in this kit
- Information from your local government authority about their forward
planning on urban transport use
Procedure:
- Taking into account all the information you have gathered about energy
use in transport, prepare a plan for the redesign of your local shopping
or business centre. You should make it less attractive to users of petrol-fuelled
cars, and more accessible to alternative transport and transport fuelled
from renewable resources.
- Your plan should be inclusive of all aspects of daily life, and involve
choices about healthy and rewarding lifestyles for all residents. It
should be accompanied by a map.
